Aroview: Efficient direction and casting propel this familiarly-plotted blackmail thriller, with Clive Owen and Jennifer Anniston playing well-off Chicago commuters who succumb one evening to mutual attraction in a fleabag motel, only to find themselves extorted by a French-accented creep (Cassel).

With an edgy propulsion that rides over some rather average scripting, this achieves a cold-hearted nastiness, with Cassel providing a oily, twitchy villain and Owen, lending his usual compelling emotional ambiguities. Stylish, if a little underwhelming.
