aka: Wizard of Darkness, Birth of the Wizard, Misa the Dark Angel
Japan 1995, 80 minutes
Dir. Shimako Sato
Rating: [R18]
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Television, Horror, Cult

Aroview: Highly impressive and lurid high-school horror, has a teenage girl (Yoshino) contending with coven of Satanic witches at her new school, who have let loose evil powers which are picking off students one by one in very nasty ways.

Although reminiscent of BUFFY in its setup, this is in fact based on a Japanese 1950s manga, supplemented with latterday lesbian trappings and fiercely gory action. Accomplished in technique, it is well worth the trip for horror fans and even better, it is only the first part of an excellent trilogy.

'Volume II: Birth of a Wizard' and 'Volume III: Misa the Dark Angel' also available.
