Aviator, The
Aroview: Top flight cinematic biopic of fascinating 20th century figure, Howard Hughes, told with consummate skill and style by Martin Scorsese, marking a return to form for the pre-eminent director.
Hughes' life story gives ample material for an epic, a young man of enough privilege to indulge his ambition and perfectionism, firstly as a Hollywood director (see "Hell's Angels") then as a pioneering aviator and mogul, who then recanted from the limelight and developed obsessive-compulsive disorder. The astounding aviation sequences aside, this is less sketchy than a typical biopic, offering a satisfying narrative in the great tradition of the American mavericks who changed the world, while Di Caprio carries the film well enough ahead of an exemplary cast.
