My Big Fat Greek Wedding

USA 2002, 95 minutes
Dir. Joel Zwick
Rating: [M]
Genres: Comedy / Romance, Independent

Topics: Indigenous & Minority Cultures.

Aroview: Surprise hit comedy written by its lead performer, Nia Vardalos, marries her own experience growing up a “plain Jane” in a Greek immigrant family with a fairytale romantic hook.

Caught between modest career ambitions and parental pressure to “marry a nice-Greek-boy, have some nice-Greek-kids and feed them nice-Greek-food” she complicates family matters by late blooming and falling in love with the decidedly non-Greek John Corbett. Deriving most of its laughs from the authentically-observed family stereotypes, this will hit the spot for those in the mood for an “ugly duckling” comedy, provided you don’t demand too much originality.
