Dir. Jim Jarmusch refines his zen-like poise in this weird, laidback comedy. Solemn hitman Forest Whitaker follows an ancient samurai code, dealing with the Mafia by carrier-pigeon and executing his assignments to the spooky hiphop music of RZA. Whitaker's deadpan dignity in the face of all challenges is both comical and, by the close, oddly affecting.
