Aroview: Alan Parker's directing debut was this startlingly original feature debut reinvents the gangster movie as a musical pastiche cast entirely with children.

Some slightly soggy numbers are overcome by the sheer verve of the enterprise and a bolshy performance by a 12-year-old Jodie Foster. John Cassini also excels as buffoonish mob boss, "Fat Sam".
