Humpday
Aroview: Though easily mistaken for another Judd Apatow dude comedy, this hilarious indie bromance about two macho BFs engaged in a dare to go ‘beyond gay’ for an amateur porn festival is a winning, roguish alternative to the din of manchild vehicles currently in vogue.
Melding improvised dialogue with a clever script that expands on its drunken premise, dir. Shelton’s gem-of-a-movie is bolstered by two amiable leads, in particular Mark Duplass (THE PUFFY CHAIR) who is an engaging presence throughout – even when trying to convince his wife of the virtues of sleeping with another man! Cringe-humour and sexual misadventure notwithstanding, the film is all the more rewarding as an examination of male insecurity and bonding, one which manages to avoid the crudeness of similar-themed comedies while maintaining a grown-up perspective on the dilemma facing its pig-headed protagonists.

4 stars (Very Good) Scarily authentic characters and conversations (guys, this Lynn Shelton has us totally figured out) will no doubt put some people off - for those of us who dig that sorta thing, Humpday is a treat. Sophisticated, funny, oddly poignant. ~fairbrother
