When Night Falls

New Zealand 2007, 80 minutes
Dir. Alex Galvin
Rating: [M]
Genres: Horror, Suspense/Crime

Topics: Health & Medicine, Period 1930s.

Aroview: Creeping Wairarapa-set thriller fixed on two nurses holed up in a remote country house caring for a patient while trying to steer clear of a rampant 'nurse strangler'.

Side-stepping the gory tropes of the modern 'slasher', this was conceived intently in the style of old-fashioned spook/detective stories, and though competently executed, fails to extend beyond simple homage. Suffering also from the same fusty-ness of its buttoned-up 1930s period, this low-budget digital feature impresses most in the set department - the 'old house' is a fabulous composite of historic places in the greater Wellington area.
