Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest
Aroview: Smash sequel-equal, which replicates the swashbuckling wit, quirkiness and visual excitement of its predecessor, again following the buccaneer-age adventures of mischievious pirate Jack Sparrow (Depp), here tangling with the East India Company, oceanic monsters and most forbodingly, Davy Jones (Nighy) - the decaying, squid-faced captain of the otherworldly 'Flying Dutchman' ship.
Following a 'more is more' strategy, the filmmakers have crammed a staggering plethora of swordfights, thrilling set-pieces and visual extravagance in the two-and-a-half hour running time, and viewer exhaustion and over-familiarity remain something of a danger. Even so, the old-fashioned 'Matinee Special' quality ensures this lunatic entertainment delivers the booty, right up to the cliffhanger finale.

3 stars (Good Enough) Davy Jones is really cool, but some of the Will and Elizabeth stuff begins to get dull. ~dr.strangelove
