- Holiday, The (2006)
- Pleasant enough TV romance
- Hideous Kinky (1999)
- Rubbish!
- Matewan (1987)
- Historically accurate & filmed in West Virginia near where the strike and shootings occurred in 1921. A heart–wrenching story conveyed by seriously good actors. Exploitation of non–violent protest by gangsters hired by the Stone Mtn Co. Needs subtitles.
- Casa de los Babys (2003)
- A bit weird & lightweight – the North/South contrasts are very passé! Both national groups are rather stereotyped, which is why, perhaps, Susan Lynch's character stands out. Ultimately superficial; a disappointment from Sayles.
- Lovesong (2016)
- Realistic & beautiful, well–acted. Small–scale, like ordinary lives. And thus rather dull! I felt the weak script let it down.
- Lianna (1983)
- Amazing wall & door colours may detract from a brilliant script. Sayles is, above all, a wonderful storyteller. None of his films (stories) follow a predictable trajectory. Or a 'he says'/'she says' sort of dialogue, like most NZ melodramas. Very fine
- Parasite (2019)
- Great plot & superb comedic acting by top performers! Brilliant surreal political satire – sheer genius! Parodies too numerous to mention. Unmissable!
- DVD $29.95 | Blu-Ray $34.95
- Interview, The (1998)
- Director's Commentary EXTRA essential. Here, subtly, the supposed criminal becomes the interviewer. Production blunders at the cabin fire confuse – day or night? Whiffs of melodrama contaminate script, as in most Australian dramas & almost all NZ ones.
- Sunshine State (2002)
- Great characters & great lines! "Comedy" with an edge, American–style. Kinda real. Maybe just too many characters with complex individual stories – but this is Sayles in his element! I liked the alligator...
- Visitor, The (2007)
- A very fine film, brilliantly acted. Well shows the fear & circumstances of illegal immigrants in the USA – in this case Syrian. The inflexible bureaucrats are very realistic. Educated Americans have little clue to what their govt. does to people.
