Imagining Argentina

USA / Argentina 2003, 103 minutes
Dir. Christopher Hampton
Rating: [R16]
Genres: Drama, Suspense/Crime

Topics: Politics.

Aroview: A controversial adaptation of Lawrence Thornton's award-winning novel, set in the Argentine dictatorship of the mid-1970s.

Thompson is a journalist who becomes one of the 'missing' under the junta, and her husband (Banderas) begins to have disturbing visions of her kidnap and torture and realises he has the psychic powers to discern the fate of many more of the 'missing'. Criticised for its jarring blend of politics and magic realism, this is still an original attempt to convey this national trauma.
