Orphans and Angels
Aroview: Risk-taking psychodrama set in a fairytale version of Auckland's seamy subcultures, and possibly NZ's most lurid excursion since ANGEL MINE.
Centred on the relationship between an overly trusting young woman (Hawthorne) and a psychopathic drug-dealer (Brown), this develops its themes with committed performances, black humour, hallucinatory sex-scenes, and an ambient soundtrack. Unfortunately, its chief weakness lies in a stark 'video' look, which dispels much of the potential poetry of its images - finally rendering the film more over-ambitious than realised.
