Australia 2002, 99 minutes
Dir. Craig Lahiff
Rating: [M]
Genres: Drama / Courtroom

Aroview: Stirring courtroom drama based on the dubious conviction for murder of an Aboriginal man in 1950s Adelaide, which dragged the government and press into a full-scale scandal.

When a young girl is murdered, the main suspect is helped by two lawyers of limited expertise – Robert Carlyle and his alcoholic partner Kerry Fox – who manage stubbornly to battle Crown prosecutor Charles Dance. Another prime stirrer in the case was a young Rupert Murdoch (played by Ben Mendelsohn), looking to boost his first newspaper’s circulation. Although lacking in great subtlety this conveys an appropriate sense of outrage, while providing some intriguing historical background.
