While waiting for an executioner to arrive from France, Juliette Binoche, wife of stoic army colonel Daniel Auteuil, all-too-successfully tries to redeem the condemned man and draw him back into the fold of the community. Admirable narrative draws strength from the wind-swept locale and central love-triangle that unveils subtle shades of human intention.
