Aroview: A remarkable, compassionate document of homeless people condemned to living in underground shelters in the New York subway system.
First-time film-maker Marc Singer spent years bowing and scraping, even ‘living’ as a homeless person for a time, to get their stories told, in a humane endeavour to restore dignity (and perhaps permanent shelter) to these society ‘drop-outs’. Elegantly shot in black-and-white 16mm (with the cast as crew!) and with a soundtrack by DJ Shadow, this emerged as an artistic triumph as well as an altruistic one, winning the Audience Award at Sundance 2000.
Also, don’t miss the DVD featurette about the making of the film - an essential companion piece.
