Dir. Lean certainly saved some of the Victorian visual polish of OLIVER TWIST to shine-up this adaptation of Harold Brighouse's rep-company standard.

4 stars (Very Good) Any film featuring Laughton & Mills & directed by one of cinema's greats is a must. The supporting cast also does justice to the quality screenplay but the other outstanding feature is the photography which captures working class Salford superbly. ~Tubbs
