Happiness
Aroview: Controversial is the byword for this disturbing trawl through the sad-case lives of various American suburbanites and their families (Lara Flynn Boyle, Dylan Baker, Phillip Seymour Hoffman among them), one that consistently pulls the rug out from under your sympathies. Dir. Solondz's previous film, the black comedy WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE, will hardly prepare you for the swathe of crippled emotions, petty pleasures and paedophilia being dissected here for our entertainment (or more tellingly, for our education?) Many have gagged on the cruel humour; equally many acclaimed it as groundbreaking and necessarily extreme.

2 stars (Good Try) Happiness intertwines several loosely related plotlines about outwardly banal suburban characters whose private lives are really teeming with depravity, tragedy, ineptitude and self-loathing. It's dark, uncomfortable & a bit sick (not in a good way). ~GenXGirl
