Aroview: In one of the more quietly celebrated dramas of the year, Sir Ian McKellen creates a finely shaded, Oscar-nominated role as real-life gay film director James Whale - he of FRANKENSTEIN fame.

Set as the aging Whale slides into a final illness, propped up in his tasteful sanctuary and waited upon by Lynn Redgrave, the new gardener Brendan Fraser catches his eye. In flashback and present, this unlikely threesome negotiate their emotions in a narrative of subtleties, where far more is at stake than a simple seduction.
