Aroview: The E.T.s phone Earth in this lavish adaptation of Carl Sagan's novel, with scientists retrieving alien radio signals from Somewhere Out There. Jodie Foster pilots this smartest, most credible story about the subject since Close Encounters of the Third Kind, helped no end by a sceptical, querying screenplay, and some stupendous special FX (some of which were completed at Miramar's WETA studios).

4 stars (Very Good) Has some excellent moments but the film can't ultimately escape being dragged down by religious bigotry. If it got rid of the McConaughey character it would be the better for it. ~Tubbs
