Aroview: John Wayne plays a sheriff who has captured a high profile bandit. With the state Marshall many days away and a gang of thugs planning a raid from across the street; he must depend on a young shotgun messenger, a retired cripple and a heartbroken drunk to defend the shanty jail.
Hawks trades in many of the classic western adventure tropes for a chamber piece that balances it's great tension with a tale of redemption. It's an all time great.
