Lesson in Love, A

Aroview: Eva Dahlbeck and Gunnar Bjornstrand play a couple who have recently separated, following the doctor husband's affair with a patient. When they unexpectedly share a train ride together, they reminisce about their courtship and the good times they shared, which are shown in flashback.

The dissolution of a relationship is a common theme in Bergman films, but this one distinguishes itself by also being a comedy, with plenty of witty banter and nice chemistry between the two leads. Bjornstrand clowns about with abandon, making quite a contrast with the morose characters he would go on to play in later Bergman films.
