Oshima's Outlaw Sixties

Aroview: Five films from provocative Japanese director Nagisa Oshima, all from the 60's, when he formed his own film production company and enjoyed the most prolific decade of his career.

Disc 1 & 2:

Pleasures of the Flesh / Etsuraku (1965, 91 min) - A troubled man is blackmailed into safeguarding a suitcase full of embezzled cash, and self-destructively spends it all in one libidinous rush. Starring Katsuo Nakamura, Mariko Kaga and Yumiko Nogawa.

Violence at Noon a.k.a. Violence at High Noon / Hakuchu no Torima (1966, 99 min) - Crime thriller that jumps dexterously back and forward in time to tell the story of a political idealist who descends into a world of crime. Starring Saeda Kawaguchi, Akiko Koyama and Kei Satô.

Discs 3 & 4:

Sing a Song of Sex / Nihon Shunka-ko (1967, 103 min) - Four politically active, sexually deviant students get up to no good over their weekend of university entrance exams. Starring Katsuo Nakamura, Mariko Kaga and Yumiko Nogawa.

Japanese Summer: Double Suicide a.k.a. Night of the Killer / Muri-shinju: Nihon no Natsu (1967, 98 min) - Set over the course of a single night, where a suicidal man and his nymphomaniac lover are caught in the middle of local gang wars. Another darkly absurdist portrayal of what Oshima described as the "death drive" in Japanese culture. Starring Kei Satô, Keiko Sakurai and Rokkô Toura.

Disc 5:

Three Resurrected Drunkards a.k.a. Sinner in Paradise / Kaette Kita Yopparai (1968, 80 min) - Farcical comedy following three young Japanese men who are mistaken for illegal Korean immigrants during a carefree day at the beach. Starring Kazuhiko Kato, Osamu Kitayama and Norihiko Hashida.
