Aroview: Steven Spielberg revives the magic of Old Hollywood with this rousing saga of a plucky farm stallion who goes on to inspire soldiers and citizens alike across war-ravaged Europe.
Although the unapologetic storybook tone will be a turn off for some, Spielberg sticks hard and fast to the law of “horse movies”, alternating big emotions with even bigger set-pieces, and the battle sequences, in particular, are undeniably impressive. Despite some harrowing depictions of life during wartime, this is certainly a “family” film in every sense of the word, even managing to replicate the look and feel of wholesome Technicolor productions unique to a bygone studio era.
