Aroview: Fans of modernist architecture will savour this docu-tribute to the life and career of Southern California architectural photographer, Julius Shulman, who died shortly after the film was made, at the grand old age of 98.
Famously framing the sleek building designs of such architects as Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner and Frank Gehry, Shulman's life's work essentially relied on the creativity of other people, yet the film celebrates his professional eye and craft and its transcendence of functionality into the realm of iconic art in its own right. Perhaps a shame, though, that the doco itself didn't adopt a similarly dazzling aesthetic. Narrated by Dustin Hoffman.
