Observe and Report

USA 2009, 86 minutes
Dir. Jody Hill
Genres: Comedy

Aroview: Divisive comedy focused on a manic-depressive security guard at a mall who makes it his mission to apprehend an anonymous flasher much to the dismay of a detective who has been assigned to the case.

This is a far darker affair than appearances would suggest, and despite the casting of amiable muppet Seth Rogan, the experience borders on uncomfortable; Rogan's security guard is not the sweet blue collar shmoe from PAUL BLART: MALL COP, but a confused and violent loner more in line with TAXI DRIVER'S Travis Bickle. Consequently, the humour here is black and savage, although the boldness of such an angle is too often undermined by shock-tactics and crass gags. Love it or hate it.
