Autumn Hearts

aka: Emotional Arithmetic
Canada 2009, 95 minutes
Dir. Paolo Barzman
Genres: Drama

Topics: Period 1980s.

Aroview: Drama focused on three Holocaust survivors who spent time together at the Drancy internment camp and re-unite decades after their release.

This 'tearjerker' is curiously clinical in its execution, with lingering shots of mournful faces and words 'unspoken' providing most of the emotional meat, and although there are heavy-hitters strutting their stuff here, one cannot help but feel the subject matter is simply too familiar, if not exhausted entirely, to be truly effective. Regardless, this will resonate if you let it, for its heart is in the right place, and Max von Sydow playing a gruff, wizened Survivor is an easy tug at the heartstrings.
