Fog City Mavericks - The Filmmakers of San Francisco

USA 2007, 119 minutes
Dir. Gary Leva
Rating: [PG]
Genres: Documentary / Film History

Topics: Showbiz.

Aroview: Unevenly pitched, if nonetheless fascinating account of San Francisco’s filmmaking legacy, from Francis Ford Coppola to Pixar maestro John Lasseter.

Weighted on the talents within the American Zoetrope collective – namely, Coppola and George Lucus – this offers a commercial-heavy perspective on bay area success (through such trailblazers as the Skywalker Ranch facility and Pixar Animation). Elsewhere though, the documentary lacks other figureheads to convincingly sell its idea of San Francisco as a film industry hotbed: MRS. DOUBTFIRE dir. Chris Columbus a bit of a stretch!
