What Would Jesus Buy?

USA 2007, 91 minutes
Dir. Rob Van Alkemade
Genres: Documentary

Topics: Business & Economics.

Aroview: Comedic activist doco tails the self-styled Reverend Billy and his faithful 'Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir' on a cross-country pilgrimage to vanquish consumerism, the scurge of American society.

Attacking the religion of spending with hilarity and subversiveness, Billy delivers ironic sermons aimed at unexpecting Christmas shoppers; his spectacular anti-commercialism protests doubling as hysterical, gonzo performance art. However, when not locked on the Reverend's mad displays, the film is less focused or constructive about the root of the cause, meaning as a political statement falls well short of genuine insight while preaching to the converted.
