Paragraph 175

UK / Germany 2000, 81 minutes
Dir. Robert Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman
Genres: Documentary / LGBT, History, War

Aroview: An uneasy delve into past atrocities, this bitter-tasting but necessary document of Nazi war crimes goes beyond the oft-told persecution of Jews to recount the Third Reich’s legislation against gays.

Drafting its title from the penal code’s official moniker, the film uncovers numerous victims, horrific tales, and a handful of survivors now well into their elderly years. A chilling remembrance, but also a balanced one, with the wartime homosexuality – from gay resistance fighters to closeted Nazis – broached from both sides of the battlefield. Narrated by Rupert Everett.
