Driving Lessons

UK 2006, 98 minutes
Dir. Jeremy Brock
Rating: [M]
Genres: Drama, Comedy

Topics: Rites-of-passage, Late-life.

Aroview: Both a coming-of-age and late-life story, this British feel-gooder concerns a shy teenager (Grint), who under the influence of a controlling mother (Linney), gravitates towards a retired actress (Walters).

Grint (of HARRY POTTER) and Walters make an excellent screen couple who forge an unlikely friendship while facing life’s hard lessons together. Zany screwball conventions mix freely with a touching rite-of-passage tale, and though the film’s narrative drives a well-travelled course, the acting in particular (surprisingly so by Grint) brings to life the dir. Brock’s own childhood.
