Aro Recommended Nightmare Alley

USA 1947, 111 minutes, B/W
Dir. Edmund Goulding
Rating: [PG]
Genres: Classics / Film Noir

Aroview: Cast against type, Tyrone Power smolders as a nefarious conman whose powers of seduction are employed to crib a secret mind-reading act from a sideshow performer, which he plans get to rich and famous on by posing as an all-knowing spiritualist.

Dir. Goulding's notorious tabloid life of drugs, alcohol and orgies is strangely apparent in the film's underbelly of carnival life, a veritable noir bromide of opaque black and white imagery coarse enough to burn a hole through the screen. The film itself, long out of circulation due to an unending dispute between producer and studio, has since garnered deserved cult status.
