Invisible Waves

Thailand 2006, 115 minutes
Dir. Pen-Ek Ratanaruang
In Thai, Japanese, Korean with English subtitles
Rating: [M]
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Suspense/Crime

Aroview: Moody and sophisticated dream-noir from the dir. of LAST LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE again casts Japanese star Tadanobu Asano, here in the role of a contract killer banished to the post-Tsunami island of Phuket after being assigned to kill his boss’s wife – who he also happens to be having an affair with.

With languid and surreal imagery courtesy of Christopher Doyle once more, dir. Ratanaruang shapes a less coherent, though suitably weirder impression of lost souls, with a cast of anomalous characters contributing to a Lynchian atmosphere of absurd tragedy, queasy humour, and strange despair. With exotic Thailand as a backdrop and the ever-present fixture of yazuka waiting in the wings, this achieves a unique Pan-Asian sensibility all of its own.
