Neil Young - Heart of Gold
Aroview: Following a tricky bout of surgery in 2005, iconic Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young decided to dedicate a year to creating this splendidly laidback concert film, staged at Nashville's famous Ryman Auditorium, home of the Grand Ole Opry.
With spartan canvas backdrops, 'heartland' image projections and C&W costumery, Young concentrates on the Americana portions of his oeuvre, slow peddling through cuts from 'Praire Wind', 'Harvest Gold' and 'Harvest' with the help of guests like Emmylou Harris, Spooner Oldham and Ben Keith. While Young's emotive delivery is as authentic as ever, dir. Demme creates his own vision of the singer's majestic grace with a subtle quiltwork of camera intercutting and soft lighting.
