Life and Loves of a She-Devil, The

UK 1986, 230 minutes
Dir. Philip Saville
Genres: Television, Drama / Fantasy, Girl-centric

Aroview: Splendidly ripe BBC adaptation of Fay Weldon's quasi-feminist satire in which a housewife (Wallace) discovers her husband's (Waterman) infidelity and, donning the paranormal powers of a 'she-devil, sets to enact revenge.

Spread over four episodes, she also has the satisfaction of ruining her female rival's (Hodge) life and family, the storyline becoming increasingly tangled as she deals with the proclivities of various other eccentrics. Told in magic-realist style this revels in sharp black humour throughout, adding up to one of the highlights of 1980s British TV.
