Mistress of Spices

Aroview: A beautiful Indian 'spice mistress' (Rai) emigrates to San Francisco, where she opens a dispensary, having to obey three special edicts - including not touching the skin of another person - in order to retain her power to lend the spices magical effects.

However, after falling for a handsome American man (McDermott) she finds herself struggling to remain focused on her ordained task. Although this strikes a few thematic notes regarding cultural identity, the story is mostly a concoction of 'magical realist' romance and wonderfully dusky imagery.
