Denmark 2004, 104 minutes
Dir. Susanne Bier
In Danish with English subtitles
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Drama
Aroview: Dialing-up the Dogme-95 credentials of its creators, this melodrama proffers a dangerous family triangle between a career soldier (Thomsen), his ravishing wife (Nielsen), and troublemaking brother (Kaas), sparked by his deployment to a troubled region of Afghanistan.
After being promptly declared killed in a helicopter crash, his surviving nearest and dearests themselves draw together in a gratifyingly unpredictable study of grief and healing - although there are several major twists waiting in the wings... If at times burdened with a surplus of cinematic cliche, the performances are fully committed. Scripted by Anders Thomas Jensen (WILBUR WANTS TO KILL HIMSELF).

5 stars (Exceptional) Watch this instead of the Jake Gyllenhaal one :) ~atsophie
5 stars (Exceptional) Yes, exceptional film. Complex, layered, confounds your expectations of the various characters. ~Andrea
3 stars (Good Enough) Choppy plot. Cruel and pointless. "Afghanistan" is ridiculously green! Realistic take on PTSD. A mercenary officer volunteered for Afghanistan, what did he expect? British were defeated 5 times in 19thC, then Russians, so what did Danes expect? ~Sandy
