Aro Recommended Where the Sidewalk Ends

USA 1950, 91 minutes
Dir. Otto Preminger
Rating: [M]
Genres: Classics, Suspense/Crime / Film Noir

Aroview: In one of his keynote roles, Dana Andrews plays an over-aggressive cop on the dirty sidewalks of New York who takes matters into his own hands when investigating a Texan millionaire's murder in a mobster's hotel room.

When he accidentally punches the chief suspect to death, Andrews tries to 'solve' both killings by pinning them on a crime kingpin (Merrill), but finds that developments and a budding romance twist the case out of his grasp. Crisply shot, grimly atmospheric and scripted by the great Ben Hecht, this is a worthy entry in the film noir canon.
