Sometimes in April

USA 2005, 140 minutes
Dir. Raoul Peck
Genres: Drama / War, History

Topics: Indigenous & Minority Cultures, Politics.

Aroview: A worthy HBO dramatisation of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, in which around one million ethnic 'Tutsis' were slaughtered by ethnic 'Hutu' military and civilians, based around the attempts of a moderate 'Hutu' officer (Elba) to save his family from the carnage.

Filmed on location in Rwanda, with a story devised from research and first-hand interviews, this concentrates less on Western culpability in not preventing the massacres (although a subplot involving Debra Winger involves this) and more on the ground-level mechanics of how the event was precipitated and fueled. More authentic in atmosphere than HOTEL RWANDA, this is at times overcomplicated in its narrative means, but leaves a powerful and complementary impression.
