Empire

Aroview: Glossy and occasionally patchy drama which reconstructs the events surrounding the assassination of Julius Caesar (Freore) and the succession of Octavius in 44 BC Rome, adding up to a reasonably entertaining history lesson.

Much of the storyline concerns the efforts of a gladiator to toughen up the young Octavius in a series of bruising ordeals, while the pair must also contend with ruthless political wrangles. Dished up with opulent set-dressing and some nice sword twirling, this can't match the class of I, CLAUDIUS, but is a fruitful enough joyride.
