Savage Innocents, The
Aroview: Curiously compelling ethnological drama from dir. Ray in which an eskimo (Quinn) wages an ongoing battle for survival in the Arctic environment and witnesses the destructive arrival of 'advanced' society.
Tonally, this fuses documentary and drama (at times uncomfortably) but also utilises Ray's considerable poetic talents in its fabulous location photography. Although undoubtedly a little patronising, in retrospect this marks another important chapter in the career of a Hollywood maverick.

2 stars (Good Try) Well-meaning tosh in which 'eskimo' are depicted as giggling children. However, one glorious location shot of walruses stands out. ~Shorty
2 stars (Good Try) Commendably the screenplay is innovative, and there is some great location shooting, but overall it is a mixed bag. ~Tubbs
