Sanshiro Sugata

Japan 1943, 80 minutes
Dir. Akira Kurosawa
Rating: [PG]
Genres: Foreign Cinema / Martial Arts

Aroview: Notable chiefly as the debut directorial effort for Akira Kurosawa, this adaptation of Tsuneo Tomita's novel finds an immature Judo exponent (Fujita) gradually improving his martial craft and attitude in the turbulent 1880s. Satisfying for the curious and remarkably confident, this still only displays occasional flashes of visual dexterity characteristic of the dir.'s distinctive style.
