United Kingdom, AUnited Kingdom, A (2016)Recommended
5 stars (Exceptional) Seretse Khama, is, and rightly so, compared to Mandala. The movie could have been longer, to more clearly, explain the events of how Britain stifled the formation of Botswana and Seretse Khama becoming King, but otherwise, excellent acting and viewing.
Bastille DayBastille Day (2016)
3 stars (Good Enough) An average thriller, but one that entertained from beginning to end. Put your feet up and enjoy.
Ghost Writer, TheGhost Writer, The (2010)Recommended
3 stars (Good Enough) The miserable weather, throughout the movie, got a bit tedious. Ewan McGregor was perfect for the role. His dialogue was spot on. Peirce Brosnan was good too. I definitely never saw the ending coming, though. Worth watching just for that!
Money MonsterMoney Monster (2016)
3 stars (Good Enough) Not a bad movie. The twist at the end made it all worth while. One to watch on a wet weekend.
ChurchillChurchill (2017)
1 star (Turkey) Totally opposite portrayal of the Churchill the public know. I doubt very much that he was so weak, as this movie depicted. If he was, Britain would never have won the war. On the other hand Gary Oldman in `Darkest Hour' is an amazing watch.
Agatha Christie Code, The Agatha Christie Code, The (2005)
3 stars (Good Enough) I was slightly disappointed. It often teased the viewer but didn't produce anything. Her disappearance was mentioned, but nothing new was disclosed. A single glimpse of archive footage was shown. More would have made it interesting.
Pecking OrderPecking Order (2017)Aro Favourite
4 stars (Very Good) I couldn't stop watching this quirky documentary. I've belonged to many clubs in my time, but none as dysfunctional as this club `was'. Well worth a watch, on a lazy Sunday afternoon – while eating some KFC.
Childhood's End (TV Mini-series)Childhood's End (TV Mini-series) (2015)
2 stars (Good Try) Lightweight. The storytelling in the first two discs was okay, although some parts weren't credible. Visitors from out of space start controlling earth and their's no resistance? The ending was preachy and a bit of a let down.
DVD $34.95 | Blu-Ray $34.95
Gone GirlGone Girl (2014)Aro Favourite
4 stars (Very Good) I kept thinking "What next?!". Rosamund Pike is pure psycho. Ben Affleck good as the bewildered–under–seige husband. The ending was unnecessary, pointless and not credible. The movie should have ended ten minutes earlier, at the more credible ending.
DVD $19.95 $14.95
Accountant, TheAccountant, The (2016)
3 stars (Good Enough) Ben Affleck is the big–name–draw, but J K Simmons is one class act. Despite the flashbacks, I still didn't pick up on one of the main points. An interesting storyline with a good ending. Not a block–buster, but still a good movie to watch.
Miss SloaneMiss Sloane (2016)
3 stars (Good Enough) Not a likeable main character but Miss Sloane is what the movie is about. The constant talking is hard going. It's an assault on the ears, but the red herrings and the final twist at the end gives viewers a satisfying end to the movie.
A Good Day to Die HardA Good Day to Die Hard (Die Hard 5) (2013)
4 stars (Very Good) Kip–i–aye–ay! Another Die Hard movie. Gotta love Bruce Willis – aging or not. ☺
King RatKing Rat (1965)
4 stars (Very Good) I loved the book. Enjoyed the movie too. Well worth a watch.
Longmire (TV Series)Longmire (TV Series) (2012)
4 stars (Very Good) Based on the `Walt Longmire Mysteries' books. A modern day sheriff with old fashioned values keeps law & order in a region where he has no jurisdiction over the local reservation & its casino; where a lot of crime entwines with law breaking in his town.
Nancy Astor (TV Mini-series)Nancy Astor (TV Mini-series) (1982)
3 stars (Good Enough) From a precocious child, Nancy Astor grew into an obnoxious, bigoted, verbal bully who believed in her own importance. Her, often hateful, attitude towards others pushed anyone who liked her away. I wanted to find some traits of endearment, but failed.
Founder, TheFounder, The (2016)Recommended
4 stars (Very Good) Having read the story of McDonalds, I was pleased to see that the dramatisation of the story of Ray Kroc, and how he obtained and grew the fast food chain, was quite factual. If only the McDonald's had listened to him, they'd be worth a fortune!
Shetland (TV Series)Shetland (TV Series) (2013)Recommended
3 stars (Good Enough) Thoroughly enjoyed this series. A good solid police drama based on the remote island of Shetland. A degree in Scottish would help, but other than that, it's excellent.
Judge, TheJudge, The (2014)
3 stars (Good Enough) I got this out thinking it was a courtroom drama. It isn't. It's a movie focusing on the relationship of a (lawyer) son with his (Judge) father and the unresolved family issues. Neither leads disappoint. A good solid film.
A Few Good MenA Few Good Men (1992)
3 stars (Good Enough) Entertaining movie starring a young Tom Cruise & Demi Moore. A disinterested lawyer learns a few lessons from a passionate, cool headed one, resulting in a good court room drama. Jack Nicholson is the true star. Seen it many times. Always enjoyed it.
Conspiracy TheoryConspiracy Theory (1997)
3 stars (Good Enough) One of those movies that you sit down and watch just for the sheer fun of it. Fast paced, Mel Gibson carries off the lovable nut–case perfectly. No–one believes the poor thing, but I did (but then I love conspiracy movies!)
Law and Order UK (TV Series) Law and Order UK (TV Series) (2009)
4 stars (Very Good) A solid British take on Dick Wolf's American version (Creator of L & O, L & O Criminal Intent and L & O Special Victims Unit). Great characters, but Bradley Walsh always steals the show, plodding away quietly in the background.
Homeland - Season 1 (TV Series)Homeland - Season 1 (TV Series) (2011)Aro Favourite
5 stars (Exceptional) Gripping drama. Have watched every series and every season is equal to the previous. Very few times has the story waned. Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin are outstanding. Highly recommended.
DVD $15 $11.25
Enemy of the StateEnemy of the State (1998)
4 stars (Very Good) Enjoyed this movie from beginning to end. Gene Hackman and Will Smith compliment each other in this entertaining fast paced, cat–and–mouse drama. Clever knitting together of all the minor characters too. Definitely worth a watch.
Boston Legal - Season 1 (TV Series)Boston Legal - Season 1 (TV Series) (2004-2005)
5 stars (Exceptional) James Spader is perfect for the role of Alan Shaw – a brilliant lawyer who isn't afraid to take on any case. Several interesting characters make up the law firm, but William Shatner's Danny Crane is the best. Good drama and intelligent comedy.
George Gently (TV Series)George Gently (TV Series) (Inspector George Gently) (2007)Recommended
5 stars (Exceptional) You feel you are back in the 60s. No mobiles, no faxes, just PC Plod doing his damndest to solve the crime and bring the baddie to justice. And changing times. An old fashioned cop with an ambitious side kick. Quality drama!
DVD $29.95, $29.95, $29.95, $29.95
WeinerWeiner (2016)Recommended
5 stars (Exceptional) This man was a successful congressmen. If only he'd stuck to texting mug shots, instead of little weenie weiner. Compelling viewing. You know what is going to happen, but you watch it in the hope that it doesn't. An emotional roller coaster for everyone
