CrisisCrisis (1963)Recommended
The style is great but don't expect much political insight – the Kennedy's are portrayed more as civil rights activists than the political dealers they really were.
Umbrellas of Cherbourg, TheUmbrellas of Cherbourg, The (1964)Aro Favourite
A light movie, but also lightly subversive. Every word is sung and the dresses match the wallpaper.
CullodenCulloden (1964)Recommended
4 stars (Very Good) One of the great anti–war movies.
Nostalgia for the LightNostalgia for the Light (2010)Recommended
4 stars (Very Good) The connections between astronomers searching the skies, archaeologists studying mummies and women searching the desert for fragnents (literally) of disappeared children doesn\'t quite achieve the profundity it might, but the attempt is remarkable.
Servant, TheServant, The (1963)Recommended
4 stars (Very Good) Dirk Bogarde\'s corrupting homme fatale is an almost unique creation.
Tarantula!Tarantula! (1955)
While the diseased Leo G. Carroll stomping around while his fellow researchers die off is quite fun, this feels like a poor copy of Arnold\'s much better \"It Came From Outer Space\". Good monster though.
Still WalkingStill Walking (2008)Aro Favourite
4 stars (Very Good) Kore–eda\'s style is so accomplished it is almost invisible, the film is complex even as it appears simple, and eventful despite very little happening. Fantastic filmaking.
GerryGerry (2002)
3 stars (Good Enough) Captures the banality of trajedy perfectly – there are no heroic gestures, terrible decisions, or flawed characters. Just a couple of guys wandering about, rather vaguely trying to cope, slowly realising that their predicament is serious.
Frankenstein Unbound (1990)
1 star (Turkey) Fairly appalling effort, even for Roger Corman. Despite being based on a book by Aldiss the film looks as if it was based around sets left over from other movies. My interest was sustained only by the main character sharing my name and title.
