aka: Shelby Lee Adams' Appalachia
Canada 2002, 71 minutes
Dir. Jennifer Baichwal
Rating: [Exempt]
Genres: Documentary / Arts & Artists

Topics: Peasantry.

Aroview: A provocative look at the work of American photographer Shelby Lee Adams, whose images of impoverished Appalachian life have earned him a reputation as an adventurous, if controversial artist.

Although providing a window into a little-seen and disturbing side of America (we witness the slaughtering of a pig), Adams work raises questions about the exploitative nature of art. This film wisely gives a voice to all sides of the debate, including Adams' subjects themselves, finally leaving a disquieting impression of the paradoxes of human nature.
