Demoted from hotel doorman to lavatory cleaner, Emil Jannings struggles to maintain his standing and self-respect, as derision for him grows among fellow workers and neighbours. Remarkably this silent film is almost completely without intertitles; the fluid camerawork of Karl Freund takes much credit for its success.

3 stars (Good Enough) A simple story but a good one. The film is standing the test of time - 95 years & counting. Love seeing the 20's street scenes & people going about their daily tasks - there is plenty of smoke & dust to contend with. ~Tubbs
