Fat City

Aroview: One of dir. Huston's later accomplishments, this gritty, yet warmly toned drama inhabits a neighbourhood of boxing gyms, lowrent bars and amiable deadbeats.

Based around two boxers and a barfly, whose stories cross and wander around each other over a period of years, this conveys their passions with some slyly comic dialogue, a handful of desultry bouts in the ring and a touching vein of sadness. An interesting contrast to most boxing films.
