Featuring intense, groundbreaking performances from its two leads, this also makes grim poetry from the cold streets of Detroit and its netherworld of pimps, drug-addicts and 'nickel-baggers'. Though some rapid 'last-act' plotting seems a little surplus to requirements, this finally stays true to its best instincts.
