Chicago
Aroview: A screen adaptation of Bob Fosse’s 1970s smash hit stage musical that measures up to the legendary director-choreographer’s exacting standards to deliver as good a screen musical as there ever was.
Directed with breathless virtuosity and precision, this has a clutch of great musical numbers and a still contemporary theme (common to all Fosse’s work) of star-struck self-interest contaminating show-business, the publicity industry and the American justice system. Despite a whiff of self-congratulation about it (all concerned seem to know they’re onto a good thing), and the cast maybe looking a little awkward at times, this makes good on its promise and gives us the old razzle-dazzle with tremendous style and confidence.

4 stars (Very Good) Possibly the best film adaptation of a stage musical, and certainly the best in recent years, Chicago with its cool noir-jazz look, legal premise, catchy and clever songs is a must-see for music and stage fans. ~Tom H
