Matrix, The
Aroview: Computer hacker Keanu Reeves is singled out by a high-tech guerilla network and trained as an operative to seize power from the evil guardians of the 'matrix'. Saturated in cosmetic cool and exhilarating state-of-the-art effects, the hottest sci-fi hit of the late 90s keeps you guessing with an intriguing (if slightly nonsensical) riff on the 'alternate-reality conspiracy' vogue.
Rookie directing brothers Wachowski outdo themselves here, but owe the usual visionary debts to the likes of James Cameron and Ridley Scott.

5 stars (Exceptional) An absolute must-see actioner, complete with the first-ever bullet-time slow-motion effects, a gritty sci-fi world, dual realities, and philosophical underpinnings. ~Tom H
4 stars (Very Good) Besides the fact that the action scenes and soundtrack are AWESOME, I love this film because now whenever you're trying to explain Descarte's evil demon to someone, you can just mention this film and they'll understand what you're rambling about. ~artsfiend
5 stars (Exceptional) Exceptional. references vertigo, Pi ~Mattcant
