With neo-realist allusions and a sure-footed treatment of its material, the film reflects somewhat ambivalently on the state of war torn Afghanistan, yet never loses sight of its human subjects and their quiet desperation. Made by the wife of Moshen Makhmalbaf (KANDAHAR), this also camps defiantly on the side of women and children, continuing the feminist tenor of the director’s THE DAY I BECAME A WOMAN.
